President Yoweri Museveni
Democracy
watchers have been worried for a while that Uganda might be sliding into a
dictatorship, thanks to increased control by President Yoweri Museveni. This
chorus has now been joined by General David Sejusa, who accused the president
of creating a political monarchy to hang onto power. The general fled to the
U.K. last month after he claimed the president is grooming his son to take
over.
Two
newspapers were also raided for publishing a letter from the general, in which
he called for investigations into alleged assassinations of people opposed to
Museveni’s regime. In a BBC Focus interview, Sejusa accused Museveni of playing
God and ruling over a decadent system.
He
is not alone: an EU ambassador recently criticised the Ugandan government for
poor corruption controls and direct Western aid has been almost totally stopped
after millions were stolen by people in the Prime Minister’s office. Museveni,
who has been President since 1986, is one of Africa’s longest-running rulers
